Kurzzeitig war ich angetan von Nicolai Dunger und den Flaming Stars. Hatte beide live gesehen und war jeweils noch einige Wochen recht begeistert. Das legte sich aber mit dem wiederholten Hören der Alben sehr. Rufus Wainwright, Franz Ferdinand, Morrissey? Für mich absolut zu vernachlässigen. "Can't Stand Me Now" der Libertines war eine ordentliche Single, das ganze Album nur noch eine traurige Selbstparodie.
Schade bloß, dass das laufende Jahr noch schwächer zu werden droht.

Sehr gute Auswahl, bis auf Cohen und Waits.
Danke Dir! Ich habe sogar noch zwei vergessen, - Asche auf mein Haupt - die ich hier einfach anhänge:

Melissa Auf der Maur - Auf der Maur
A Perfect Circle - Emotive

Aber zu Cohen und Waits: Doch - ich schätze beide Platten, und das nicht nur aus langjähriger Verbundenheit! Waits hat vielleicht die weniger spektakuläre von beiden vorgelegt, aber es rumpelt und knarzt einfach schön - ich mag es. Die "Dear Heather" ist wohl die überraschendere von beiden, und doch wieder nicht. Seit "The Future" hat Leonard hier konsequent eine Linie in die entspannte Richtung weiter entwickelt (schwierig, das auszudrücken!). So überrascht, wie die Kritik die Platte aufgenommen hat, hat sie mich deshalb nicht. Aber ich sehe sie auch ein wenig als Alterswerk, denn sie ist auf sehr wundersame Weise wärmend, tröstlich und entspannt - eine Platte zum Abschalten und Sich Wiederfinden. Daß Leonard nicht sein Leben lang zerissen und leidend Lieder schreibt, wäre auch sehr unrealistisch. Der Mann ist 70, schreibt immer noch supertolle Songs, nur jetzt aus einer relaxten Warte. Und den Hang zum Schönklang, zu Frauenstimmen und auch manchmal leicht kitschigen Melodien hat er immer gehabt und steht dazu.

...so ungefähr. könnte sich an einigen stellen noch ändern. insgesamt ein sehr schwaches jahr, die höchstwertung bekam kein album von mir. 2005 gefällt mir bereits jetzt weitaus besser (3 höchstwertungen).

Wirklich zwingend und überzeugend waren nur die ersten drei. 4-8 noch ganz solide. Ab 9 wirds mittelmäßig. Und das in einem Jahr was an Neuveröffentlichungen so vielversprechend klang. Selten so enttäuscht worden von meinen Lieblingsmusikern.

Hi Doc, ist 'ne Band aus Leipzig! :)
Habe auf Grund der von dir schon erwähnten Kritiken die Scheibe letzte Woche mal kurz angeskippt, eine Begeisterung stellte sich nicht ein - war doch mehr Death als Prog.
Eventuell habe ich beim Skippen auch nur die Death-Parts erwischt?:confused:

Aber vielleicht kann Sam mehr dazu sagen?!

Sollte jetzt nicht besserwisserisch klingen. Schöne Liste. Wenn ich's mal über mich bringen würde, so eine aufzustellen, wären von deinen Alben bestimmt auch einige drauf.

BTW: die "Transfiguration" ist bereits 2003 erschienen. Aber es stimmt schon, eigentlich sollte jedes Jahr ein Ward-Album auf der Bestenliste stehen. Der Mann muß produktiver werden! ;-)

Das nenne ich mutig hier!

Du weißt, ich bin ein offener Hörer: Gute Band, gute Sängerin. Ich glaube, die schreibt Texte, die eine Generation bewegen (nicht unbedingt mich).

Der Gitarrist schreibt im Booklet, dass er sehr auf Third Eye Blind steht - finde, das hört man auch - und vielleicht findest du sie auch deswegen okay.

Aber Juli sind besser als die unsäglichen "Wir sind Helden". Die Sängerin schlägt Holofernes um Längen...

Die Texte von Holofernes finde ich auch ganz gut, aber anders, sehr viel Sprachwitz (müssen nur wollen etwa). Hier ist es die Musik, die mich sehr stört - die ist sehr hektisch und erinnert mich ständig an Ideal (die ich nach wie vor in Ehren halte)

Ich habe Juli neulich auf MTV gesehen und finde die fast jugendgefährdend schlecht.

Interessant. Ich habe sie vor ziemlich genau einem Jahr bei Stefan Raabs Contest gesehen - und fand sie echt gut.

Insgesamt muss ich aber sagen, dass an Divine Comedy und Morrissey mein Herz sicher stärker hängt als an Juli, und dass die beiden erstgenannten über die Zeit gesehen sicher häufiger den Weg in meinen Player finden werden.

Jetzt bin ich aber zur Abwechslung erstmal gespannt auf die neue Morrissey.

Es gibt 2004, fünf Alben die ich mehr schätze. Entschuldigen? Bei dir? Hmmh...
Es fiel mir definitiv nicht leicht, ich habe hin und her überlegt, auf- und ab, von rechts nach links aber die anderen fünf Alben sind für meinen Geschmack einfach viel zu gut, um nicht zu sagen einen Ticken besser als "Absent Friends" (sorry).

DAS ist Kunst, ein unglaublich gutes Cover-Album. Wirklich. Besser geht's nicht.

Ich persönlich finde ja, dass du mich nicht andauernd mit Sting aufziehen solltest.
Ach ja und deine Besternung zu "Keys to the World", mußt du dringend nochmal überdenken. ;-)

Will "keys" keine ***** geben, weil ja noch Luft nach oben sein muss für Divine Comedy dieses Jahr.
Unser Kunstverständnis ist natürlich gänzlich verschieden. Beautiful South sind schlimm.

Wie kannst du denn "Absent Friends" so gut finden und den Text von "Mutual Friend" noch nie registriert haben? Rätselhaft.

Ist doch schön, wenn du so ein Faible für BS hast. Ist eben Musik, die mich völlig kalt lässt. Du hättest auch Phil Collins auf 1 setzen können und ich hätte genauso reagiert.

Ich weiss auch nicht wie das passieren konnte, mit mir und diesem Song! Rätselhaft? Ja irgendwie schon. Ich war sehr abgelenkt von der Melodie, das passiert mir jedes Mal wenn ich mir diesen Song anhöre.

Du kannst "The Beautiful South" doch nicht mit "Phil Collins" vergleichen...
Hmmh, es macht nicht wirklich viel Sinn mit dir darüber zu diskutieren.
Es ist okay... aaaaaaber... verdammt schade!

Absent war auch meine Platte des Jahres, Beautiful South gehen gar nicht und das Album der Finn Brothers ist ein bißchen fad.
Ich sollte meine Liste mal wieder updaten. Platz 6 für The Divine Comedy ist definitiv nicht in Ordnung.
Dein Beautiful South Problem werde ich wohl nie verstehen (ebenso deine *** Sterne für das aktuelle Duke Special und die ***** Sterne für die Holzbox).

Ich verstehe 70 % deiner posts nicht, mit 80 % deiner Musik kann ich nichts anfangen und deinen avatar mag ich zu 100 % nicht.

Mit Beautiful South habe ich kein Problem, ich finde die nur langweilig wie einen Fahrstuhl.

Duke Special habe ich oft gehört, nachdem es hier so gelobt wurde, und halte es für überschätzt. Viele songs hat man ganz schnell über, zum Beispiel "Last night I nearly died". Die Holzbox und die Singles sind einfach sehr schön aufgemacht.

Mit deinem Platz 1 wird songbird sehr zufrieden sein, meine Nummer 1 hat ja elendigst abgelosed in seinen Augen/ Ohren (was aber wohl an seiner Beautiful South-Allergie liegt... er bekommt ganz schlimmen Ausschlag wenn er sie hört.)

"The Finn Brothers" sollte ich mir dann wohl auch endlich mal zulegen, es scheint sich zu lohnen.
"Annett Louisan" verwundert mich dann doch etwas, zwei Plätze hat sie sich dazu erkämpft. Was gefällt dir so an ihr? Ich will jedes Mal schreien, wenn ich sie im Radio höre.

Ich vermeide es, Radio zu hören, wann immer es geht. Dann vermeidet man den Effekt der Medienvermüllung, womit ich meine, dass manche (meist immer dieselben) so durchgenudelt werden, dass man sie gar nicht mehr hören mag. Darunter hat schon James Blunt gelitten, und ich fürchte, es gilt auch für Annette Louisan.

Auf ihrem Album ist sie ja „nur” die Sängerin. Musik und Texte sind sehr durchdacht und clever gemacht, wurden mit viel Liebe zu Details und in feinen (im Sinne von zarten) Arrangements eingespielt. Sogar der Nachfolger ist im Grunde gut, wäre es nicht nochmal genau dasselbe in grün.

Die Finn Brothers sind uneingeschränkt zu empfehlen - absolut begnadete Sänger und sehr gute Songwriter.

Die Dauerbeschallung bestimmter Song aus dem Radio vermiest einem so Einiges.

Crowded House höre ich immer noch sehr gerne. Ich werd' mir dann mal das Album der Finn Brothers bestellen.

Unbedingt mal in die "Seven Swans" reinhören! Ist noch um einiges reduzierter/folkiger als die Nachfolger und sehr anrührend (insb. "The Transfiguration").
Die Liars-"Konzept"-Platte zum Thema Hexentanzplatz sei dir ebenfalls empfohlen, geht musikalisch schon in eine ähnliche Richtung wie die "Drums...".

Wer ist denn Max Richter?
Ein deutscher Komponist in der Tradition von Steve Reich und Yannis Xenakis. Hat u.a. mit Mercury Rev und Roni Size (!) kollaboriert und bspw. das Vashti Bunyan Album "Lookaftering" produziert. "The Blue Notebooks" (auf Fatcat erschienen) ist eine ruhige, meditative Sammlung diverser Stücke für E-Piano (u.a. mit der Stimme von Tilda Swinton, die eine Kafka Geschichte rezitiert). Liest sich jetzt alles eventuell wahnsinnig streng und verkopft, klingt aber leicht, inspiriert und wunderschön elegisch. Großartiges Album!

Du findest die Evanescance echt besser? M.E. sind da 3 richtig gute Songs drauf. Der Rest ist doch eigentlich sehr durchschnittlich.

Naja, ich weiß nicht, ich fande die Scheibe schon immer gut. Mir fällt schwer an "Fallen" auch nur etwas schlecht zu finden. Das Album ist in sich sehr geschlossen, Hits und Melodien so weit das Auge reicht. "My immortal" und vor allem "Imaginary" sind die großen Stücke auf der Platte.

Doch doch. Rein vom Gefühl würde ich am liebsten bereits jetzt die 5 zücken. Manche Stücke darauf könnte ich auch 6 Sterne geben. Leider komme ich nur auf einen Schnitt von 4,2. Fest steht, dass es das Potenzial zum *****, also zum Meisterwerk hat, manche der Lieder müssen sich mir aber vielleicht erst noch erschließen. Album des Monats !

Tolle Liste, aber gerade Which Way Is East fand ich immer schwach und langatmig, jedenfalls im Vergleich zu Hyperion With Higgins. The Out-Of-Towners fängt seltsam zerfahren an, wird dann aber noch richtig gut. Auch das aus meiner Sicht eine eher überraschende Wahl.

Ich schätze an "Which Way Is East" gerade die Langatmigkeit, aber eher im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes: der lange Atem der Stücke, die auf der Stelle treten zu scheinen, hat es mir bei der Platte stets angetan. Ein einziger Flow, nicht besser als "Hyperion", sondern anders.

Sicher, aber auch schlechter. ;-)

Ich finde ja, dass das Album gar keinen Flow hat, gebe aber gerne zu, dass das eine Mindermeinung ist.

Zerfahren wirkt bei "The-Out-Of-Towners" höchstens das Intro, spätestens ab "You've Changed" ist alles tight und kompakt. Ein glühender Keith Jarrett-Verehrer werde ich in diesem Leben aber trotzdem nicht mehr. Aber Peacock und DeJohnette sind todsichere Banken.

Kaum jemand traut sich zuzugeben, dass Jarrett der größte Pianist seit Bill Evans ist. ;-)

Das mit der Zerfahrenheit des ersten Tracks stimmt, aber ich komme darüber nicht so recht hinweg. Liegt vielleicht an mir.

Es ist wie das Auge eines Orkans, der ruhende Pol ihres Schaffens. In seiner Ruhe liegt eine enorme Kraft und Ausstrahlung. Wenn alles zu viel wird, die Scheibe um dich wieder auf das wesentliche zurück zu holen.

Nur **** für ein Album, das AC-Übersongs wie "Winters Love" und "Who Could Win A Rabbit" enthält?Leider ja. Es sind auch noch mehr als nur eine Handvoll weiterer, phantastischer Tracks drauf ("Visiting Friends", "Kids On Holiday" etc.), wirklich rund ist das Album durch die zwei, drei schnipseligen Nichtigkeiten dazwischen aber dann doch irgendwie nicht für mich. Dr. Music würde vermutlich einfach eine tollkühne Rechnung, basierend auf den gravierenden Unterschieden zwischen "Longtracks" und kürzeren Cuts, anstellen. Mich stören beim Hören diese lärmigen Inserts bedauerlicherweise immer noch etwas zu sehr, um das an sich großartige Album höher heften zu können.

nutzt glaub ich nix...leider! Er mags halt gerne wilder......liegt vielleicht am Alter. Vor 20 Jahren hätte die Scheibe bei mir auch keine Chance gehabt.....

Möchte dir wegen der Ruhe die du ja bei "which way is east" so liebst nochmals Anouar Brahems "The astounding eyes of Rita" nahe legen, besser gehts nicht!

Danke. Mit Brahem tu ich mich allerdings etwas schwer. Geht mir teilweise dann doch ein wenig zu sehr Richtung NewAge/Meditationskurs und ist wohl eine Facette von ECM, mit der ich wahrscheinlich nicht wirklich jemals warm werde (manches von Towner, einige Alben des späten Garbarek usw.). "Barzakh" ist aber ein schönes Album.

Ich würde sagen, unbedingt, kenne aber nicht alle Deine Vorlieben. Da Du aber immer wieder Musik aus der Garage unter Deinen Faves nennst, kann ich mir gut vorstellen, dass Du mit den Stars sehr viel Freude haben wirst. Wirf doch mal in Gedanken die Shadows, Johnny Kidd & The Pirates und die Cramps mit ein paar guten 50s B-Movies sowie einem Armvoll Noir Fiction Novels in einen Mixer, dann hast Du in etwa eine ganz gute Vorstellung, wie die Band klingt.
Und mit "Named And Shamed" würdest Du gleich mit ihrem besten Album einsteigen.

Gerade mal 15 Alben aus deiner Liste besitze ich nur. Zur Nummer 1 kann ich nichts sagen, weil ich das Album nicht kenne. Der Interpret allerdings .... Wahrscheinlich ist das wie im Umkehrschluss mit meiner (von dir nicht ganz nachvollziehbaren) Liebe zu Sandy Denny oder ähnlichen Künstlern. Dafür gefallen mir deine Nummer 2 und 3 sehr gut. Wahrscheinlich auch bei mir beide ziemlich vorne dabei (wenn ich den 2000er Jahrgang dann mal schaffen sollte). ;-)

Wirklich interessante Liste. Biffy Clyro habe ich damals vor 150 Zuschauern in der Ahlener Schuhfabrik gesehen. Kann man sich heute nicht mehr vorstellen.

Die "Shadows collide with people" von John Frusciante kommt mir zu gut weg. Vielleicht war mir die Scheibe auch einfach zu schwierig. Ich kann da heute noch nicht viel mit anfangen.

"Around the sun" von R.E.M. wird ein ewiger Streitfall bleiben. Für micht gehört sie in die Top 3.
