Mel Powell Trio – Borderline
hatte ich bis vorhin null auf dem Schirm und ist ganz fantastisch! Ein Trio von ts/p/d mit Paul Quinichette, Mel Powell und Bobby Donaldson 1954… Powell war zu dieser Zeit bereits sowohl klassischer Komponist als auch Swingpianist… das heisst zum einen, dass er es prima hinkriegt, den Raum auch ohne Bass zu füllen, und zum anderen, dass das Programm schön abwechslungsreich gestaltet ist, Swing eine Spur Latin, und auch ein paar etwas abwechslungsreichere Kompositionen (zB Quin and Sonic, das fast ein bißchen an Milhaud oder so erinnert) – mit Bop hat das meiste wenig zu tun, moderner Swing trifft es eher… und Paul Quinichette (ein Lieblingstenorist) hab ich selten in so einem interessanten Setting gehört, das so perfekt zu ihm passt
Ich zitier mal noch Evensmoo als zweite Meinung:
„The wizard Mel Powell’s two trio recordings for Vanguard are among the most thrilling jazz performances of the early fifties! PQ has the honour of taking part in one of them, and he shows his gratitude by bringing out the best he has got. He plays with a smoother tone than usual, is completely relaxed, utterly sensitive to the delicate yet very demanding piano accompaniments; „solo“ here might as well often be labelled „duet“. All titles are utterly interesting one way or the other, but to make two choices; play the Powell original „… Sonic“ and then „If Dreams …“ in a pleasant medium tempo. If you were not a PQ fan before, you are now!!“
Hab auch die von „gypsy“ genannten CD – werde dies bei meiner nächsten „Innenstadtexkursion“ auf die Mitnehmliste setzen ….
