°) die Session mit „Hammond“ Smith auf den Alben „Angel Eyes“ und „Velvet Soul“ veröffentlicht, die Compilation „A Stranger in Town“ enthält rund die Hälfte der Alben „Velvet Soul“ (die Hälfte ohne Hammond Smith), „Sock!“, „Night Lights“ und ein paar andere Stücke – überhaupt verschmilzt hier einiges … ich habe daher auch Compilations/Twofer bewertet und nicht einzelne Alben, irgendwie nehm ich Ammons nur recht selten als Album-Künstler wahr (Jug, Boss Tenor) ansonsten sind das eher einfach auf 35-40 Minuten getimte Ansammlungen von Tracks, die aber in den besten Fällen – Boss Tenors in Orbit, The Black Cat, Twistin‘ the Jug, Nice ’n Cool, Brother Jack Meets the Boss … – verdammt viel Spass machen! Anderswo hätte hingegen etwas mehr Ordnung gut getan und längst nicht jede Jam Session ist wirklich gelungen (siehe Soul Summits und Left Banks, noch mehr das Live-Album mit Moody), und mit ein paar der überproduzierten Alben aus der Spätzeit kann ich mich ebenfalls nicht sehr anfreunden
Für mich insgesamt ein Fall, in dem ganz klar gilt: the whole is greater than the sum of its parts – eigentlich reicht bereits ein Ton oder zwei und ich gebe: Gene Ammons * * * * *
